The history of Computing in statistics is outlined, from Babbage's engines through electro-mechanical calculators to electronic computers. The present state is discussed in relation to algorithms, with their dependence on hardware and languages, control languages, statistical data structures and operating systems. Important recent developments include graphics and the application of expert-system technology.
