Summary Multiple regression equations relating the times-to-peak of flood hydrographs on twenty-six rivers in NE. England with the characteristics of causative rainfall and those of the relevant river basin, showed flood-wave formation to be largely dependent on storm duration and the average, minimum, infiltration rate of the soil. Other significant factors were the initial flow in the river, temporal variation of rainfall during a storm, and main river channel length and slope.
