Studies of fluctuations in insect populations: 1 The infestation of Broadbalk Wheat by the Wheat Blossom Midges (Cecidomyidae)

A project is explained in which the fluctuations of insect populations in the field are to be studied on a quantitative basis. Three avenues of approach are to be used; the degree of infestation or intensity of attack by the larvae, the degree of parasitism and the dates of emergence (and number of broods). The gall midges are to be used for this study. 2. In this first contribution the wheat blossom midges, C. tritici and S. mosellana, on Broadbalk have received attention. The fluctuations in intensity of attack over a period of 5 years have been recorded. In the same way the degrees of parasitism for 3 years are noted. The bionomics have been studied over a period of 6 years. 3. The methods employed in sampling and breeding have been explained in detail. 4. A full discussion of the results obtained is being held over until the whole project, entailing similar studies on four additional species of gall midges, has been completed. This should be in 2 years time.
