Variance component estimation for unbalanced hierarchical classifications

A systematic method for computing the coefficients of the variance components in the expected mean squares of a hierarchical analysis of variance is described, together with a simple method of pooling if the outermost hierarchy is analysed separately for each of its categories. Programming the computation for electronic computers is briefly discussed.
