In the following, criteria for comparing classifications are discussed. I shall not be concerned so much with the mathematical forms of criteria but more with the logical principles governing their use. Details of various criteria and further references are given by other contributors whose papers are cited using square brackets, thus [Sokal]. Surprisingly many problems arise, some of which cannot be resolved satisfactorily.
