AQUEOUS leachates of coniferous and broad-leaved forest litter readily dissolve hydrated ferric and aluminium oxides with the formation of soluble ferrous and aluminium complex compounds1. Further work on the properties of these complexes has shown that both the iron and aluminium compounds are strongly sorbed by soil sesquioxides and clay minerals. RESP-3259
