Abstract

A variable, and often substantial, amount of the carbon in carbonized materials, such as coal, charcoal, and graphite, is oxidized when these materials are treated with acid dichromate under conditions used in determining soil organic carbon. It is concluded that these methods cannot be used to detect carbonized materials in soil or to discriminate between carbon in carbonized materials and carbon in soil humus.
