Abstract

The progress made in monitoring of aphid vectors of plant viruses in Europe is reviewed and discussed, with particular reference to the Rothamsted Insect Survey, which was devised in 1959, and subsequent sampling throughout Great Britain; trapping in the Netherlands (initiated in 1968); Denmark (1971), Northern Ireland (1976); France (1977) and Belgium (1980). These were integrated into a voluntary cooperative venture, EURAPHID, in 1980. Other sites are believed to be operative or to have been initiated in Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland and Italy, and similar traps have been operating in Sweden since 1978.
