Abstract

The Diamond Back moth (Plutella maculipennis) and the Best Army Worm (Laphygma exigua) are known to migrate over long distances. On two occasions, one for each species, their movements have been related to wind trajectories. These are the only two well documented instances of long distance travel of migrant British lepidoptera related to synoptic weather. Both involve journeys of some 2,000 miles and conditions of flight of several days.
