Abstract

Re-examination of mud from Lake Victoria showed the presence of pyrite. It has been claimed that these muds contain abnormally large amounts of organic sulphur, but pyritic and organic sulphur would not be distinguished by the method that was used. The organic sulphur content of the mud is therefore much less than previously reported, and there seems to be no reason to assume the presence of unusual organic sulphur compounds.
