Abstract | This dataset contains Moth and Aphid catch abundance data from the Rothamsted Insect Survey light-trap and suction trap networks. The dataset is a supplement to Bell et al (2020) (https://doi.org/10.1111/icad.12412) and can be used to reproduce the R analyses presented. |

Data collection period | 01 Jan 1969 to end of 31 Dec 2016 |
Geographic coverage | UK |
Data collection method | The Rothamsted Insect Survey operates two trap networks throughout the United Kingdom that sample aphids and moths using suction-traps and light-traps, respectively. More information about the network and data collection processes can be found at https://insectsurvey.com/. |
Data preparation and processing activities | Data were extracted from the RIS database ‘Paul’ that holds records of moths and aphids. For each site-year between 1969 and 2016, we calculated the total number of individuals summed across all species caught in that site-year. The files aphid_linear_estimates.csv, aphid_non_linear_estimates.csv, moth_linear_estimates.csv and moth_non_linear_estimates.csv are linear and non-linear trend predictions derived from the AphidTidy and MothTidy datasets using the poptrend R package summary.trend function. This function is used for computing the yearly estimates. The files aphid_random_linear_effects.csv and moth_random_linear_effects.csv are random year effects components visible following the call plot.trend when tempRE = TRUE in the call to ptrend. |
